IOSH work cancer campaign gains support in Bangladesh

A Bangladesh-based company has become the country’s first supporter of a global campaign to raise awareness of work-related cancer.

EHS Map Private Ltd has given its backing to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s (IOSH) No Time to Lose campaign, calling it a “great initiative to help save people from work-related cancer”.

It is one of more than 130 companies across the world that has signed up in support of No Time to Lose, while over 70 businesses have formally pledged to take direct action against occupational cancer risks in their workplaces.

Dhaka-based EHS Map provides training and consultancy services in both Bangladesh and Singapore.

Its work is particularly focused on fire safety, occupational health and environment and food safety, and helping industry to establish, implement and maintain quality, environment and health and safety management systems.

In making its supporting statement to No Time to Lose, Muzahidul Islam, managing director of EHS Map, said: “As a learning service provider, we have excellent opportunities to discuss occupational cancer with adult learners from diverse workplaces.

“We are proud to be a part of this cancer prevention campaign and urge everyone to participate in it.”

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 666,000 people die every year worldwide from a work-related cancer – equal to one death every 47 seconds.

IOSH is highlighting through No Time to Lose five of the common risk factors for occupational cancer registrations and deaths – diesel engine exhaust emissions, solar radiation, silica dust, asbestos and shift work.

EHS Map plans to share details of the campaign through its training activities, its industry newsletter and via social media.

Muzahidul said: “In Bangladesh, occupational safety and health is a very new topic and the majority of people are not aware of it.

“We are trying to do something to change this from our social responsibility point of view. We want to use our experience to help the nation and industries know what to do, and how to do it.”
