North Yorkshire County Council and Highway Safety Officers Group
I am current chair of the Highway Safety Officers group which meets four times a year in Warwick.
I am also an employee of North Yorkshire County Council as a Health and Safety Manager, providing the H&S support to Business and Environmental Services Directorate, which includes Highways and Transportation amongst other services. I also provide the same support to City of York Council Highways.
I have used the IOSH No Time to Lose materials to present to highways team across both organisations, which have been well received albeit with some surprise as to the unknown elements of silica dust.
As chair of the Highway Safety Officers group I would like to pledge the groups support for the campaign and we hope to hold a seminar with a speaker from IOSH in support of the campaign relating to exposure to silica dust.
The group has been meeting since its formation in around 1993 and formed by the past Chair Nick Philp. It started as an information sharing group including Local Authorities in the Midlands area. I have been a member since 1997 and recently took over form Nick following his retirement for work and some time I spent as Vice Chair supporting Nick when he could not attend.
The seminar hopes to include topics relating to highway activities including the silica dust problem which is particularly relevant to the highways industry as a whole.
