The HSA supports IOSH’s No Time to Lose campaign with its focus on the prevention of occupational cancers.

Recent reports from the Central Statistics Office indicate that occupational illnesses account for more days absence from work than accidents. We have seen increased numbers of mesothelioma deaths arising from past exposure to asbestos from coroners and the National Cancer Registry. We have also noted recent research studies linking night work with breast and prostate cancers.

Both the Carcinogen and Asbestos Regulations and associated guidance provide a clear framework for employers into how to manage and prevent employees’ exposure to known carcinogens at work and our inspectors routinely monitor compliance with these regulations. In 2015 we will have an increased focus on the prevention of silica exposure and managing health in construction.
