Tractor unhitching and the importance of safe stop

A self-employed farmer (over 65) was killed when he became trapped between his tractor and the implement he was attempting to disconnect from its three point linkage. This incident occurred on 26 August 2016, nr Wakefield Yorks.

Workplace transport continues as a major cause of deaths and serious incidents in our sector. To prevent these we must always use safe stop and operate controls from the driving position.

HSE NI and the Farm Safety Partnership have produced a range of equipment guidance as part of their Stop and Think Safe (Slurry, Animals, Falls and Equipment) campaign.

Further guidance on using tractors safely includes case studies for avoiding incidents is available.
